What is Umrah ?

The Umrah meaning is typically referred to as the “lesser” or “minor” pilgrimage, and it’s an act of worship undertaken by Muslims. Umrah requires Muslims to travel to the holy city of Makkah, where the exalted Ka’aba can be found. This is essentially the centre of the faith and the focal point of worship.

Ultimately, the journey of Umrah is sacred, and it boasts great significance in the lives of Muslims everywhere. It’s a treasured Sunnah that provides an individual with the unique opportunity to refresh their faith and cleanse their soul. On this journey, Muslims strive to obtain forgiveness, recite sincere dua, and ultimately strengthen their bond with Allah (SWT).

Steps for Performing Umrah

Entering Ihram (Sacred State)

  • Ihram garments are worn at one of the designated Miqat boundaries.

  • Miqat is the boundary beyond which a person intending to perform Hajj or Umrah must not pass without assuming Ihram. There are five Miqat locations surrounding the Kaaba

Performing Two Rakat of Ihram Prayer

  • It is recommended to pray two Rakats before formally entering Ihram.

  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) recited Surah Al-Kafirun in the first Rakat and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second Rakat. If these are known, it is best to follow his Sunnah. Otherwise, any Surahs can be recited.

  • After completing the Ihram prayer, the pilgrim makes the intention:
    “O Allah! I intend to perform Umrah solely for Your pleasure. Make it easy for me and accept it from me.”

  • Pilgrims continue towards Masjid al-Haram while reciting Talbiyah, Takbir, and Salawat.

  • Upon seeing the Kaaba, these recitations stop.

Talbiyah:

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka Laa Shareeka Laka Labbayk. Innal Hamda Wan-Ni’mata Laka Wal-Mulk, Laa Shareeka Lak.”

Meaning: “Here I am at Your service, O Allah, here I am! You have no partner. Here I am! Verily, all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.”

Tawaf (Circumambulation of the Kaaba)

Tawaf Kaaba

  • The pilgrim enters the sacred courtyard and begins Tawaf, which involves circling the Kaaba seven times, starting from the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Each round is called a Shawt.

  • After completing seven rounds, two Rakats of Tawaf prayer are performed, preferably near Maqam Ibrahim.

  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) recited Surah Al-Kafirun in the first Rakat and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second Rakat of this prayer.

Rules and Etiquette of Tawaf

  • One must be in a state of ablution (wudu) throughout Tawaf. If wudu is broken, the pilgrim should leave, renew their wudu, and resume from where they stopped.

  • The pilgrim should keep the Kaaba to their left while circumambulating.

  • Walking is required unless physically unable, in which case a wheelchair may be used.

  • Upon reaching the Black Stone each time, the pilgrim should raise their right hand and say “Bismillahi Allahu Akbar” as a greeting.

Sa’i (Walking Between Safa and Marwa)

Sa’i

  • After Tawaf, the pilgrim proceeds to perform Sa’i, walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa.

  • This act commemorates Hajar’s search for water for her son, Prophet Ismail (peace be upon him).

  • Pilgrims ascend Safa, face the Kaaba, and make the intention:
    “O Allah! I intend to perform the Sa’i of Umrah for Your sake. Make it easy for me and accept it.”

  • The journey consists of four trips from Safa to Marwa and three trips from Marwa to Safa, totaling seven rounds.
